It’s Wednesday, and that means another installment of Who The Hell Are You?, where we profile indie bands, labels and organizations. This week, we’re talking to Skylar Entertainment’s Diane Foy.
Who are you? Diane Foy What’s your company? Skylar Entertainment: indie music publicity and artist consulting.
How did your company start?
I started the company in 2004, doing publicity for Fading Ways and then Curve Music. With a lot of networking, more and more clients came to us after that.
Before Skylar Entertainment, I was always in the music and fashion industry in many ways, including as a makeup artist, journalist and photographer. Later, I went to Trebas for music business and interned with longtime publicist Cameron Carpenter. My background is diverse, but everything I did was to be a part of the music industry.
Describe the kind of music you work with in 100 words or less.
Rock, glam, punk, indie, rap-rock, hip-hop, pop, adult contemporary, alt.country, roots; I love so many genres. However, I usually end up with some type of rock.
What was your most recent project?
We are getting amazing response for D.O.A., The Morning Stars and Buck Brothers from the U.K. We are gearing up for Canadian Music Week with a few other international acts: Belgium’s Needle And The Pain Reaction, Finland’s 22-Pistepirkko and Australia’s Future Native. Dearly Beloved is going on tour again in March. With the Buck Brothers, I have taken a more involved role and have been managing them for Canada to get their distribution deal, a radio promoter (Andrea Morris at AM To FM Promotions), booking shows and general consulting, in addition to publicity. They are one of the hardest working bands I have ever met, so I couldn’t help but do whatever I could to help them develop a presence in Canada. I passionately love all the artists I work with, so it’s exciting to be a part of their success.
How committed are you to doing music full-time?
I refused to get a real job, so this had to work.
What is your day job?
This is it. However, I wouldn’t say it’s strictly a day job. Often it is early morning to early morning and back again, especially during the festivals. That reminds me to stock up on energy drinks and bars for CMW.
Where can people find out about your company?
On my website and MySpace page.
What’s something that we haven’t asked about that you’d like our readers to know?
On March 22, Skylar Entertainment presents The Morning Stars, Buck Brothers, and Peeler at Toronto’s El Mocambo.
